It’s official. Hawaii Fashion Month has finally arrived!
So much to see and many events to attend, starting off with the official Hawaii Fashion Month Kick-off Party on Tuesday, October 1st.
Staged at the new T.J. Maxx Building at Ward Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, the party came complete with gourmet food, local entertainment and a fashion show (of course!) produced by Hawaii RED.
Aside from showcasing the talents of Hawaii’s local designers, this red carpet event’s main attraction featured the creations of world-renowned natural fiber and textile artist Akihiko Izukura. If you don’t know this man by his name, you will remember him for his work. Here’s what you need to know: He is a descendant from a distinguished line of master silk weavers for Japan’s imperial family. His creative process is influenced by the traditional Japanese way of life, where everything is used and nothing is thrown away. He creates all his pieces from scratch and by hand . So, from weaving, to cutting, to dyeing, Master Izukura’s new designs are not only traditional, but also fashion-forward in an eco-friendly way.
Twenty of his designs were unveiled at the party, modeled by the gorgeous ladies of Niche Models and accessorized with Sonya Monique’s jewelry, an designer from Kauai. His designs were so intricate and detailed, it blew my mind to learn that he created them all himself. Simple, elegant and flowing in movement, the garments showed true art. When accessorized right, they make a statement that deserves a double-take from any bystander.
