If you happened to be in the Ward Centers – Kaka`ako area for the last Discover Kaka`ako event this month, then you received a surprise treat – and no, I’m not talking about the delicious food truck vendors.
Hawaii Fashion Month made fashion history in Hawaii with the first ever fashion flash mob, with dancers from Underground Movement and 18 professional models strutting their stuff across Auahi Street.
The night began at Ward Center Theatres where 18 mannequin-like models descended from the escalators wearing cut and twisted HFM tees created by designer Nickie Q. of Twisted Cuts. The look – think rocker style from the Coachella festival – was completed with bottoms from T.J. Maxx and Town & Country Surf, and jewelry from Art on a Wing. In true runway fashion, the girls stomped their way across Auahi Street, through the crowd and on to the entertainment stage of Discover Kaka`ako where the Underground Movement dance team energized the crowd with an electrifying hip-hop performance followed by a fashion show.
The show was not exactly a-typical of what most people would consider as Hawaii Fashion, but as Hawaii is a melting pot of different cultures, its fashion takes on other forms beyond the aloha-print shirts and muumuus.
I’m so happy that I got to be a part this special event.
So who do we get to thank for this amazing exhibition? Fashion writer and producer (and my old HS track coach) Amanda Stevens – or Coach Mandy (as I like to call her). Don’t forget to checkout her blog on Nonstop Honolulu with more pics and articles about HFM.
